SSN replies: In discussion at the event a number if issues were raised:
    • In the context of disability, the resistance of some to have their disabilities viewed as adversity and consequently their ability to overcome their disability as resilience.
    • The interaction between the mind and the body such as the physiological impact of generations of deprivation, the physical changes to the brain through substance misuse of both the user and of the unborn child. There was a danger of fatalism but also potential to empower people through understanding the physiological impacts
    • Our attraction to the physical as offering “hard” measurable evidence, whether there ever is value free measurement and the need to use all the evidence available – objective or subjective.

I’m not sure about relationship between them, but I have observed in several different jobs over the years that some people who have physical challenges such as chronic ill health or disability (or care for people who do) are remarkably resilient and I have wondered if it is because they have had experiences which make them develop it?
However, I have also seen that people who are actively choosing to address their personal and social development start to feel more empowered and more able to make other positive choices such as focusing on their health and wellbeing.

There is certainly evidence of that the isolation, loneliness and vulnerability experienced by individuals with weak social networks is damaging to their health and well being. Indeed there is even a direct link between strong positive social networks and recovery from open heart surgery! Given the link between social networks and many of the areas identified in the domains of resilience highlighted by Brigid a relationship between health and resilience seems inevitable.
